Amazon.com is great....believe me, I buy stuff from them all the time. But let me tell you why it looks like my CDs are out of stock there so often and why it takes you so very long to receive them when you do order one that is supposedly "coming back in stock soon".
Amazon will rarely order CDs from independent labels like me in large or even medium quantities. They will not keep much "stock on hand" if you do not have a prior record of selling many CDs at a time. What happens is that they order one or two discs at a time from me in discrete orders just days or a week apart. It's always a thrill to receive the order emails because someone wants to hear the music (!!!!) but as you can imagine, this teensy-tinsy stocking method is..........very annoying.
I have made the decision to group my shipments to Amazon in order to save myself some postage costs and some precious time. So I do not fulfill orders to Amazon immediately: I wait until at least 5-10 CDs have been ordered in total and then I ship them via the slow "media rate" in a box. Thus, yes, it may really take a month or 6 weeks or even longer for my album to come "back in stock".
(By the way: Amazon, via the "Advantage" consignment program that most of us independent musicians use, pays us about 45% of the sale price, so you can calculate what the extra $1.32 per single disc-shipment will skim off of that already luxurious amount. They also charge me a $30 fee per year in order to participate in this sales program. Sorry to be so bottom-line about it, but I have to be financially protective or I won't be able to continue recording my music.)
Amazon is a trusted and revolutionary online retailer. They are dependable, quick and have incredibly foolproof secure servers for all your transactions. I do recommend them but just wanted to let you know how it works from my perspective.....I hope things may change in the future, but for now this is the way they want to do it and if I want to have my music represented on Amazon.com I have to play along.
Thanks for listening and for reading my little rant!!!
